Left-hander

What is the problem of being a left-hander? I thought it is no longer an issue in today’s world. Whether I like it or not, it is still an issue. Yesterday, my sister was excited to tell us that her five-year-old son is able to write with both hands. She found it out when she visited her son in his kindergarten. The kindergarten teacher had made him writing with his right hand instead or left. My dear nephew is used to his left hand. Hence, my family had categorized him as a left-hander. Everybody will not be bothered at all if he was to use his right hand earlier. Now that my sister figured out that her son is able to use his right hand as well, she couldn’t be happier.

There was another incident which took place a few years ago during Chinese New Year reunion. My uncles and aunties were discussing about left-handers when they figured out that I happen to be one. An aunty (Aunty A) was saying that the elderly used to say that left-handers tend to be smarter. Or course, this is merely a belief. When everybody was agreeing to that belief, suddenly, another aunty (Aunty B) who isn’t a supporter of lefties told us that her daughter was a left-hander. Aunty B explained that she doesn’t want her daughter to be a left-hander. So, Aunty B insisted her daughter to use her right hand once Aunty B found her using left hand doing anything that Aunty B thought is supposed to be done with right hand.

What is the problem of being a lefty?

Well, at least it is better today compared to last time. Now back to myself, I have been a lefty all my life. I can still recall how angry my father was when he saw me using my left hand to scoop rice. I was about three or four then. He scolded me as long as he needed to cool down. Ooh.. one, he was angry because I am a lefty. Two, I scooped the rice and almost a quarter of the rice I scooped fell onto the floor. So, it gave him a good reason to scold me as a lefty.

That was what I can remember. As for another which my mom and sister told me, my father used to hit my left hand when he saw me writing with my left hand. Again, I was only three or four then. As I grew older, he couldn’t be bothered anymore if I am a lefty or righty as long as I do my things right.

Using left hand doesn’t mean we will do things that are against the word RIGHT! Lefties do RIGHT things too. Why pressure our younger generation when they could be a lefty? True, lefties may face problems in using tools that requires right hand to perform better. But, don’t worry, whether it is easy, hard, or super hard, lefties will find their way to make their life easier. The keyword is ‘determination’, not lefty or righty.
